We built Voxr because we were tired of choosing between convenience and privacy when it comes to voice-to-text on macOS.
The existing options are either cloud-based services that send your audio to someone else’s servers, built-in dictation that feels limited, or enterprise software that costs hundreds of dollars a year. We wanted something different: a voice-to-text tool that runs entirely on your Mac, powered by local AI, and doesn’t phone home.
That’s Voxr.
What Voxr does
Voxr sits quietly in your menu bar. When you need to dictate text, you activate it, speak naturally, and Voxr transcribes your words, processes them through a local language model, and pastes the result directly into whatever app you’re working in.
The entire three-stage pipeline runs on your machine:
- Capture. Voxr uses Apple’s Speech framework to capture and transcribe your audio in real time.
- Process. The raw transcription is processed by on-device AI for cleanup and formatting.
- Paste. The polished text is placed on your clipboard and pasted into the active application automatically.
No internet connection required. No audio files uploaded. No third-party servers involved.
Why we built it
Voice input is genuinely faster than typing for a lot of tasks: drafting emails, writing notes, composing messages. But every time you use a cloud-based transcription service, you’re sending a recording of your voice to a remote server. That might be fine for some use cases, but it never sat right with us for everyday dictation.
Local AI has gotten good enough that there’s no reason to make that tradeoff anymore. Modern language models can handle text processing tasks on consumer hardware with impressive quality. We figured it was time to build the voice-to-text tool we actually wanted to use.
What makes Voxr different
Fully local. Everything happens on your Mac. Your voice data never leaves your machine.
Native macOS app. Built with SwiftUI, Voxr feels like it belongs on your Mac. It’s fast, lightweight, and respects your system preferences.
No subscription. Voxr is free. There’s no monthly fee, no premium tier, no usage limits.
Works offline. Since processing happens locally, Voxr works without an internet connection. Airplane mode, coffee shop with bad wifi, wherever.
Universal paste. Voxr pastes directly into whatever app has focus. Text editors, email clients, chat apps, browsers. If you can type in it, Voxr can paste into it.
Getting started
To use Voxr, you’ll need macOS 14 or later. The setup takes about a minute:
- Download Voxr from voxrvoice.com
- Grant microphone and speech recognition permissions when prompted
- Start talking
